We're Opening a Sealed Japanese 151 Box on Whatnot , And Someone's Getting the Master Ball - Grown Up Kids

There is something about the number "151" that just hits different. For those of us who grew up in the late 90s, it wasn't just a number, it was the ultimate goal. Bulbasaur to Mew. We spent our recesses trading battered cards and trying to convince ourselves that if we pressed "B" and "Down" at the exact right moment, we’d catch that legendary bird.

Now that we’re older (and supposedly more responsible), the nostalgia hasn’t faded, it’s just gotten more expensive. That’s why I’m so excited to announce that we’re bringing the absolute crown jewel of modern Pokémon collecting to our next Whatnot stream: a factory-sealed Japanese 151 Booster Box.

And yes, before you ask, someone in the stream is getting the Master Ball.

The Reality of Sourcing: The "Little Guy" Struggle

I want to be transparent with you all about how we actually get this stuff. Most people think running a toy and card shop means you just call up a distributor and they send you pallets of whatever you want.

I wish.

When I first started trying to source collectible trading cards, I went to ACD, one of the biggest distributors in the US. They didn’t outright reject us — but the deal was basically that we needed to buy into a bunch of overpriced deck boxes and top loaders first, and even then there was still no guarantee we’d actually get Pokémon cards.

That made no sense for us. We 3D print better deck boxes ourselves, and I can source top loaders from China for about 2 cents each. I’m not going to pretend that loading up on expensive filler inventory is some smart business move just to maybe get access to the product people actually want. That’s exactly why we had to pivot.

But at Grown Up Kids, we’re scrappy. We’re collectors first, and we weren't going to let that kind of gatekeeping stop us from getting the good stuff for our community. I spent weeks in the trenches of Alibaba, vetting vendors, checking references, and risking my own capital to find the real deal. It was a grind: evaluating shipping times, verifying "factory sealed" claims, and dodging the too-good-to-be-true scams.

Eventually, the hustle paid off. We found a killer Japanese vendor who came through for us on OP05 (One Piece) at $98 a box when everyone else was price-gouging. That relationship opened the door to Japanese 151.

Why Japanese 151? (The Master Ball Chase)

If you’ve only ever opened the English version of 151, you’re missing out on the best part. In the Japanese set, every single booster box (usually) contains one: and only one: Master Ball reverse holo card.

These cards have a unique holographic pattern of Master Balls repeating across the surface. They are incredibly rare, they look stunning, and since they aren't in the English set, they are the ultimate "flex" for a serious collection. Whether it’s a Master Ball Pikachu or a Master Ball Caterpie, pulling one is an absolute rush.

The "Grown Up Kids" Strategy: No Shady Business

I’ve spent a lot of time watching other Whatnot streams lately, and frankly, some of it is ridiculous. I saw one stream the other day where they were auctioning off 300 "slots" for a chance at just three packs. The math doesn't work, and the odds are stacked so heavily against the buyer it feels more like a scam than a hobby.

That’s not how we do things here. We’re bringing credibility back to the stream.

Here is exactly how our Japanese 151 show will work:

  • Factory Sealed: You will see me break the factory seal on the box live on camera. No pre-searched packs, no "mystery" boxes.
  • 20 Packs, 20 Slots: There are 20 packs in a box. We are auctioning off exactly 20 slots.
  • All 20 Must Sell: This rule is non-negotiable — every single one of the 20 pack positions has to sell before I open the box. If even one slot doesn’t sell, I refund everybody and end the show. No partial openings, no funny business.
  • Starting Bids at $15: I’m starting the bidding at $15 per pack. If I’m selling these normally at $20, I want to give the community a chance to get a deal, while also letting the hype of the auction decide the final price.
  • You Pick Your Position: This is the big one. If you win a slot, you don’t just get a random pack. If you win the first slot, you pick which pack I grab (e.g., "Give me the fifth one from the top"). It gives you back that feeling of control you had at the store as a kid.
  • Live Packaging: Every hit is sleeved and every package is sealed right there in front of the lens. You see it leave my hand and go into the mailer.

Why We’re Doing This

At the end of the day, Grown Up Kids isn't just about moving inventory. If I just wanted to make a quick buck, I’d sell these boxes sealed on eBay and call it a day. But I want to build a community of people who love this stuff as much as I do.

I want to be the shop you go to because you know I’ve done the work to verify the source. Whether you're looking for Marvel Legends figures to complete a Build-A-Figure set or a LEGO Botanical set for your office, you're buying from someone who actually cares about the "mint-in-box" condition and the authenticity of the item.

The Whatnot stream is just the next step in that journey. It’s a way for us to hang out, rip some packs, and share that "Master Ball" moment together.

Join the Show

I’m going to be running some hype shows leading up to the big event to get the word out. Make sure you head over to Whatnot and follow the Grown Up Kids shop so you get the notification when we schedule the 151 break.

We’re going to open the box. We’re going to auction the slots. And someone: maybe you: is going to walk away with that Master Ball.

Let’s have a conversation, let’s rip some packs, and let's keep being the kids we were always meant to be.
